Laundry Room Makeover

What would you do if you were a mother to 13 kids living in a 3,000 sq ft house with a 6’ x 8’ laundry room?

This is not a trick question nor is it a reality show; it’s the real life of my good friend Kim.

I’ve know Kim, her husband Chuck, and their family for 12 years, and I am constantly in awe of her ability to keep it all together on every level: from schedules, to meals, food shopping and of course laundry.

Despite multiple attempts at keeping an organized space, Kim’s laundry room was always a source of chaos for her.

PROBLEM: A blank wall opposite her washer/dryer with piles of laundry baskets underneath a small folding table wasn’t cutting it.  The kids get changed for practice downstairs and are always rummaging to find what they need. As you can imagine, it only takes a few minutes for her laundry room to look as if a tornado came through it!

SOLUTION: Utilize the vertical space on the blank wall and behind the door was top of my list. Kim’s one request was that she wanted everything out of sight. With the help of my good friends at Organized Living we created a functional area that would be easy for everyone to maintain.

Take a look at the finished product:

By installing 8 O-Boxes we were able to assign each of the school aged kids his/her own drawer for uniforms. We also added labeled bins above to keep overflow items corralled and organized.

The final touch was adding an over the door rack to provide additional storage space for cleaning supplies, bags and such.

Thank you, Organized Living for helping this already organized mom of 13 to step up her game!

Organize Your Garage On A Budget

Written by Laurie Palau. Posted in BLOG: A Life More Organized, Garage Storage, Getting Organized, Organized Home, Vertical Space

If you’ve ever tried to organize a garage you know how overwhelming it can be.

I spend most of my days helping others de-clutter and organize their homes, so finding the time to work on a project in my own home always takes a back seat.

This summer I finally installed a new garage system in my own house thanks to the help from my good friends at Organized Living.

We don’t have a lot of storage space in our basement, nor do we have a useable attic, so all of my seasonal decorations need to be stored in the garage.  Since I only access them once a year, I wanted to maximize the vertical space going up the wall-leaving the floor clear for things like a shop vac, snow blower and generator. I also have several categories that I need accessible such as car supplies, tools, gardening, etc.

Below are some before and after photos from my garage transformation:

50% of homeowners rate the garage as the most disorganized place in the house, the place they delay getting organized, yet it’s a place the entire family uses regularly.

Organized living is offering 25% off their Freedom Rail line though the month of September.

If you’ve been procrastinating on tackling the black hole you call a garage, now is the time to get motivated!

Look Up! Make the Most of Vertical Space

Written by Laurie Palau. Posted in BLOG: A Life More Organized, Getting Organized, Kids Organization, Organized Home, Simplify, Vertical Space

If you live in a home or apartment that lacks space, it’s important to do whatever you can to keep clutter from accumulating.

One of the most common pitfalls (aside from simply keeping too much stuff) is underutilizing vertical space.  I recently took a trip to one of my favorite stores, The Container Store, where I stumbled across a grid system that they were displaying as a wall mounted pot rack. It got me thinking…what other uses could this modular grid system double as? Here are two solutions I came up with….

  • Mud room storage.  If you are like me, your mudroom (provided you are fortunate enough to have one), is one of the most trafficked rooms in the home. Making use of every possible inch is critical. If space is an issue, this multi-functional grid system may just be the answer you are looking for.

Why I love it:

It provides the freedom to incorporate pieces that suit your specific needs.  Do you need a place for your dog’s leash? Are you constantly searching for your keys? Perhaps you need a place to put outgoing mail; this grid system allows you to corral all your “must haves” by the door as you come and go.

  • Office/Homework Storage. Do you find yourself with piles of papers accumulating on your counters? Are you rummaging through junk drawers looking for office supplies? Not only is that unsightly, but it’s inefficient.  If cabinet and drawer space is a premium, consider putting one of your walls to work.

Why I love it:

Customize attachments that make sense for you.  Everything is literally at your fingertips from rulers, to scissors to notebooks.  Important papers, projects or homework are never forgotten because they are always within sight, without being in your way.

The key is to “think outside the box”.  If you are at a loss for how to maximize a space in your home or office sBo can help.  Check out our website for a full list of services or give us a call and we will happily discuss how we can best help.
